Hi all,
recently from benthic samples we were able to collect interesting microgastropods (all less than 4 mm). There are six species attached herewith for identification. 4th species is that of a Nassarid and the first species looks like a Turritellid. Please help me to identify the species. All were collected in depths less than 10 meters.

these were collected from the east coast of India, Ennore, close to Chennai. We were carrying out benthic sampling at various predefined stations and were able to collect these microgastropods.

Dear Dr. Deepak, i hope these are not micromolluscs or microgastropods. These are likely to be young ones of macro molluscs. Micromolluscs are different from what i have seen from the attachment that you have uploaded. All the best for your identification.

Number 1 is a juvenile of Turritella sp.
Number 2: I do not know
Number 3: Mangeliidae (e.g. Bela, Propebela)

Dear Deepak, i think these are juveniles of "normal" gastropods.
After a little research these are my results:
1) Turritella cfr. communis Risso, 1826; or Mesalia varia (Kiener, 1844)
2) I don't know
3) Mangelia coarctata (Forbes, 1840); or Mangelia unifasciata (Deshayesi, 1835)
4) Nassariidae, Nassarius sp. maybe Nassarius pygmeus (Lamarck, 1822)
5) Cerithium sp. cfr. C. vulgatum, Bruguiere, 1792
6) Orbitestella sp. cfr. O. decorata, Laseron. 1954

Dear All,
thank you for your identification and clarity. Can anyone please define a micromollusc? Is it based on the size or the family?? Eg. Mangelia (specimen #3) as mentioned here in less than 12 mm. I can see it only through a microscope! So it is definitely not macro!!

again Number 2: cf. Terebridae (e.g. Hastula sp.)
Microgastropods should not be larger than 3 as adults, very often around 1 mm.

Dear Dr. Deepak,
Simply to understand, the adults or max. size (in its life cycle) should be micro.
Say for example, heterobranch snails and slugs of families Acochlidia, Sacoglossa, Cephalaspidae, RHODOPEMORPHA, OTINOIDEA and Nudibranchia comes under this groups of snails and slugs. These are interstitial snails and slugs and lesser known molluscs. Haszprunar, G. and Michael Schrödl and their team have done good works on this. Especially 3-D anatomy using AMIRA is popular in these species. I knew because, i am trained for this particular work in ZSM, Munich long time back by Schrödl and Timea P. Neusser. Hope this is useful.

By definition Micromolluscs are not allowed to exceed size of about 5mm for fully grown adults. You may like to have a look at this link for insights:

Can get families OK; to go further would need more work.
1. Turritellidae - can't tell whether juvenile without knowing sp.; not T. communis (that's a European sp.)
2. Hastula (Terebridae)
3. Mangeliidae (but not M. coarctata - European)
4. Nassariidae (not N. pygmaeus - European)
5. Drilliidae
6. Architectonicidae

The Solariellidae (6) is Minolia impressa (Neville, 1869) from Sri Lanka
The Terebrida is called Impages nassoides (Hinds, 1844) from Persian Gulf.
For the Turridae you must wait another time.
The bibliography is few and difficult but if don't are new species we find their name.

The first is Haustartor cingulifer (Sowerby, 1825) (Turritella) see fig. 11
the second is Ithycythara funicostata Robba et al, 2007 see fig. 20
