I am extracting data for a systematic review/meta-analysis and have come across a paper which uses oligonucleotides as an intervention - they have sense, anti-sense, mixed base, and vehicle groups.
I am not familiar with this type of study and would like some help understanding what the sense and mixed base groups are - are these additional controls? In which case, which is the most useful control group as I only have space for one in my data entry software :)

An antisense oligonucleotide is an oligo that can hybridize with the corresponding codifying RNA. In principle it should down-regulate the expression of the given gene. The sense oligonucleotides are some times used to hybridize with possible natural antisense sequences that can be present in some cells. The control of gene expression mediated by oligonucleotides needs the use of several oligonucleotides as control to be shure that final outcome of the experiment is due to the wanted hybridation, and not for instance to aptameric effects (interaction oligo-proteins) flammatory effects (that can be caused f.i. by the presence of GpG fragment that can be generated by degradation of the used oligonucleotides), and so on.
