How can I distinguish carbon black contents in a TOC analysis carried out? I have to determine TOC in some soils samples but I have to subtract the contribution of any carbon black eventually present. May I act on thermal pretreatment of the sample?
To determine non-combined carbon in our carbon-containing materials usually we apply the method of complete dissolution of all the other substances from our samples. Then easy - deposition of all this carbon (non-dissolved, but suspended in solution) on a filter with subsequent burning and quantative determination of released CO2. Commonly, the solvent we apply is a mixture of HNO3 and HF. However, I have no ideas about your organic matter behaviour in the similar solvents... More likely it will dissolve together with all the minerals, although I am not sure in it...
