I have prepared a ketogenic diet consisting of 70% fat.. I am facing problem in administering it in animals ad libitum because of its paste like consistency. Can anyone really help me solve this problem??
a clssical ketogenic diet is 4:1 relation between fat and others. for example the diet should consists of 80% of fat and 10% of amino acids and 10% of carbohydrates. what kind of animals are you going to feed? and how you are planing to do so?
If you warm the diet to a liquid state and mix it with a carrier of some sort, such as straw, the animals may consume it. They might even consume the liquid alone before it gels.
Thanks Prof. Britt !!! Well arming the diet may liquify the diet but i experienced chocking of nozzles of feeding bottle.. Since i am planning to administer ad libitum it will be extremely difficult to keep it in room temperature...
Thank you Prof. Kampmann !!! I am Planning to administer ketogenic diet to both Rats and Mice ad libitum.. I have been administering freshly prepared KD ad libitum.. I have noticed that the animal consumes relatively less amount of diet compared to normal pellet diet...Was it be due to the high fat content or its palatability??
Hi Dr. Saavedra, Yes there is a problem of consistency.. It forms a semi-solid paste like consistency.. You cannot administer the diet in bottles and it needs a specially designed diet chamber where u can administer the paste like diet and it should be within the reach of the animal ..
