Can anyone explain the role of complexing agent Oleic acid and citric acid during formation CdSe or CdS?

i prepared few samples of CdS with ciric acid and oleic acid but the obtained morphology of samples is highly enhanced by complexing agent used.

in case of oleic acid i obtained beads like morphology and citric acid gave nanofilms. so i want to know how these to acts during the synthesis?
