I am working on time series in chemical composition of shallow ground water samples collected between 1994 and 2010 at the largest known boreal wetland. Aside from the understandable and well correlated trends of increasing temperatures and the concentrations of fulvic and humic acids with declining pH, I noted a distinct increase in the ratio between alkaline (Na+K) to alkaline earths (Ca+Mg). There are no carbonate sediments; the SI is exceeded only for iron oxides/hydroxides. Can anyone suggest an explanation? Is there any similar trend in the Scandinavian, Scottish or Canadian wetlands?
