I am a bat carer based in England, recognised by the UK Bat Conservation Trust. I have two female common pipistrelle bats that were passed to me as juveniles earlier this summer, after being found on the ground.

On release from shoulder height (outstretched hand), one will only fly 1-2 meters in a downward direction, although her landing is co-ordinated. This also was the case on a trial flight outside (in the area where she was found) but she did manage 5 meters before landing.

The other, who I don't think has ever flown, will hold onto my gloved hand with her feet, and flap her wings but then jump down, with no attempt to fly.

Both are adequately nourished, groom, and appear well, with no apparent wing damage.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do? At the moment, they are in tanks with fabric to climb up, but are rarely see to be wing stretching. The one who - possibly - has never flown was in a larger mesh enclosure for a while.

I did wonder whether they would benefit by being placed in a flight cage? There is not one local to me, but I know where there is one.
