I have a visual basic (very very old version) software written by myself (I can send you free), and however there is Benoit 1.3, that is very cheaper and you can have for 70 euros or so.

Yes we have used Benoit, it has a box counting option for calculating fractal dimension, which we used while developing our own software.We used it for calculating the fractal dimensions of architecture, and found it to be reliable and consistent.

Unfortunately our software is not ready for release yet!

We developed a matlab-based graphical user interface that includes several algorithms to calculate fractal dimenssion on time series data. You can freely download it from http://labcsd.uib.cat/ginaps. I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but perhaps it can be helpful.

I had gone through every code (matlab code) available on-line, but each and every code giving me different value. Would you suggest what we have to use either software or Matlab code.    

Have you tried FracLac for ImageJ? There is a lot research published using it. It is free and available from http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/plugins/fraclac/fraclac.html. The Help is built in so when you open it and click on box counting, it is right there. If you send me emails, I can help with any questions you might have.

The latest release of FracLac is attached. to use it, download free ImageJ (see Harland's post) from http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/download.html and install it. Then, close ImageJ if it is open, save the attached FracLac file in the "plugins" folder in ImageJ,  restart ImageJ, select Plugins>Fractal Analysis>FracLac. It has built in help and explanations of how to do fractal analysis.

Yes, Try Image J fractal plugins - they work well. I hope you already tried since this is an old forum.

I am publishing my software, written years ago, that permit to calculate fractal dimension very easily. I have tested it in numerous papers of mine. Some weeks and whn it will  be published I'lss send you.

the algorithms you are looking for are included in the collection of tools by our Time Series Analysis Group (headed by Holger Kantz) at MPIPKS, of which you can freely download all sources at http://www.mpipks-dresden.mpg.de/~tisean/ .  The algorithms are well-tested and documented in the textbook Kantz and Schreiber (2004). Nonlinear time series analysis. Cambridge University Press. ISBN 0-521-52902-6 .

I don't know in what form you have data, but I can recommend the MountainsMap software. you can download the trial version:

The software includes several methods: Enclosing Boxes, Enclosing Boxes in real units, Morphological Envelopes. The fractal dimension is calculated from the slope of that one of the two regression lines that corresponds best.

Use image j software for calculating fractal dimension by box counting method

I used Matlab and programmed for box counting method

The box counting method is the best. D= -Log2(#Pixels)/Log2(Scale). So if it is an area just divide each square edge by 2 so Scale = 0.5 and Log2(0.5) = -1. As you divide each edge by two you get 4 squares so after 1 iteration on a full square,

-Log2(4)/Log(0.5) = -2/-1 = 2. If you scale 0.25 then -log2(0.25) = 2 and you get 16 lit pixels so -log(16) / log(0.25) = -4/-2 = 2. A full square is of dimension 2.
