Hello, I have a DRX spectrum of a polymer but I have not managed to identify it, what i can do?
Marwa Ben Amor, just to clarify these are not spectra, it is not a spectroscopic technique. They are diffraction patterns.
What approaches have you used so far to try and identify it? Give us a bit more information.
Polymers are found in standard databases such as the ICDD Powder Diffraction Files (PDF-2, and a lot more useful real patterns in PDF-4). You need to use a search-match routine in your software to match the peak positions with those in the database. Polymers are often poorly crystalline and give poor peak shapes, it is not an easy job and you may not be able to get a definitive identification.
If you post your raw data someone may be able to help further.
Whitout a little bit of information it is very difficult to help you. First of all you can post your pattern
periodic arrangement of atoms guides X-Ray to scatter only in certain direction. This will cause high intensity peaks. amorphous phase scatter x-ray in different direction and cause a deterrent effect to form narrow high intensity peaks. as Prof Ian J Slipper said polymers normally has amorphous phase so X-rays will be scattered in many directions leading to a large bump distributed in a wide range (2 Theta) instead of high intensity narrower peaks. So it is a very difficult task for you to identify the XRD pattern in this case.
