We are conducting oxidative degradation studies in pharmaceutical using AIBN. A coworker sugested that the AIBN couldstay retained in the HPLC column, causing degradation in subsequent injection of the API.
I did not find any literature reporting that behavior. Any of you ever had this problem before?

AIBN is a source of free radicals as you know and is a self-reactive material. Check the handling instructions and stability. The vendor can give you the analytical method to check the purity.
It depends on the chromatographic conditions like the type of column and mobile phase composition. For a C18 column, the more water (polar compound) in the mobile phase the more likely an organic molecule will be retained by the column (hydrophobic).
As a general rule of thumb, I always try to do a quench/sample cleanup step after such experiments in forced deg studies as part of sample prep to avoid such issues. Another option is a column guard.
If you really want to know, you could do an assessment of AIBN recovery from the column by doing the following - inject sample with AIBN without the column (slug) and with the column and compare the relative AIBN signals to determine recovery.

Let's assume that the AIBN stay retained in the column, it would be spread through the colunm extension. The possible reaction between the retained AIBN and the API would not provide a well shaped peak, right? I believe it would be more like an oscilation on the baseline.
