In some courses the student has to take not only a theoretical but also practical or clinical parts. Written examination may not be enough to evaluate of the students as MCQ. Thus, what is the real exam which evaluates and differentiates the students along with ongoing evaluation?
Of course number of students, time and variation among examiners are major problemsto carry out oral examinations at least for undergraduate students. However, in my openion, e.g., oral examination is carried out to differentiate between student who understands the course or who just have the course by heart.
Written exam is enough...all students can not perform in oral exam even they are very good in subject..
In my opinion , especially in engineering education, the most of exams should be in both forms, written and oral, for most of the major subjects in the field. It is outcome from my 33 years of educatator's experience as well as result of taking part in few major educational reforms in my country...
