In order to improve quality and deliver high standards, there should be an acceptable ratio of total students to staff members per year. What are the ratios for preclinical (basic) and clinical levels nationally and internationally and variables of admission for students?
In some universities and societies, admission to medical faculties public or private faces many problems such as large number of new students and lack of staff of teaching in some topics,it is hard to solve this problem locally and along to improve the quality of teachings.
Thank you Shafig, thes are th eratios for students at the class or lecture as by European, WHO and others. However, my question is for the total students and how much should be admitted of new student in faculty according to the society requirements.
I teach in a medical school. We have 300 students in each year and class size depends on what teaching it is: lectures, tutorials, lab sessions.
When you post student:teacher ratios - I'd find it helpful if there was some more information:
- Is this what your current experience is - or is this what you think is appropriate, or recommended by an organisation or the literature.
- Is this for lectures, tutorials, bedside teaching, seminars or other modes of delivery?
- How should these decisions be made? Should it be on the basis of
a) the financially sustainable model; or
b) the expectations of the community, and calculations by some faculties or governments about how many doctors are required; or
c) how many for whom we can reasonably provide good teaching and learning; or
d) something else. Are there pedagogical parameters that would help us here? How well can staff know 300 students (or 1200 over the whole cohort)? Does that matter?
