Dear Georges German, I fully agree with Yasser Fakri Mustafa in this regard. In any case it it clear to me that you cannot leave out your supervisor when publishing the results of your dissertation. The supervisor should be the corresponding author of the paper(s).

Georges, yes a student can publish as is evident currently. Many a time, many academics have started their careers by publishing work that they were engaged in as students. It is not uncommon for students to begin their publication journey with their original supervisors for their dissertation or thesis projects. Yes, of course, it is possible for a student to publish a research paper. It is vital to disseminate knowledge. Actually, in some universities, publishing at least one paper is required before being awarded a Master’s degree. I encourage you to read other published papers to get a clear picture on how to write your manuscript. After writing it, seek guidance from your supervisors, or other lecturers in your field.

Every bachelor, master or PhD student in chemistry has a supervisor who conceives the research topic, provides the lab space and equipment and organizes a research grant or fellowship for the student. Thus the student is not working in an empty space. So why should this student publish his research work alone? The supervisor must always be one of the authors, normally the corresponding author.

You should first tell your supervisor about your interest in publishing. Then, you have to look for good scientific journals in your field, and start writing taking into consideration that writing a research paper is different from writing a thesis.

We work in an experimental field of research, namely synthetic chemistry. This is a discipline which normally requires collaboration between students and various specialists. One part of the original question was "How difficult it is for a student to publish a research alone?" For chemistry I can say that it is not only difficult but impossible, even though this is certainly not what you want to hear. In our papers the specialists who make important contributions (analyses, spectroscopic measurements, crystal structure determinations etc.) listed as co-authors. Then there is the supervisor (i.e. me) who conceives the research topic, supplies the lab space and chemicals, organizes payment of the student and writes the paper. Can anyone explain to me why under these conditions I should not be corresponding author of the paper and why the student should publish the work alone??

Your field is not my expertise so not entirely sure how it works in your discipline. But I agree with Frank T. Edelmann : you have done your research within a research group where your supervisor has guided you and you have made use of the existing infrastructure etc. He/she deserves some credits for that.

The question is why, as you indicated, people are not that enthusiastic. Is it because no one has the time to write an article? Or is it that because for all sorts of reasons your results are not yet publishable? Could it be that there is simply a lot more that needs to be done before it does.

Realize that (and I remember this from my own time as a newcomer) in an ultimate article a lot is left out. Material that can/should be discussed in a thesis in detail is material that at a max can end up in a supplement of a paper. Perhaps in the eyes of your supervisor, there is simply not enough (newsworthy) material left for a publication.

Apart from this, I think that as a master's student you should be happy that you have collected some potentially publishing material. Turning this into a real publication is ambitious, and together with the arguments made by Frank T. Edelmann it seems to me that a possible paper is unfeasible and undesirable without the agreement and cooperation of one of your supervisors.

Why not? In some countries such as China, Russia etc. and some institutions, it is a requirement for PhD students to publish a number of papers from their research before graduating.

This opinion varies depending upon the research lab you persued. Perhaps, there will be a conflict of interest with your supervisor. But if you join the other scientist who could help you with your credibility you should proceed to it. Because you need to disclose the funding and declare the conflicts if any. Dear All, in our experimental area of research (synthetic chemistry) the supervisor generally plays a key role and no student in this discipline can work in an "emoty space". The supervisor normally conceives the research topics for the students, organizes research grants, supplies the students with laboratory space and chemicals, and in the end writes the paper(s). Thus it is unthinkable that a student write a papers without having the supervisor listed as corresponding author!

Thus the resulting research articles are most often multi-author papers (which is by no means less worth than single-author papers). One notable exception are review articles, which are often written by a single author.
