Hello,
An inorganic powder calcined at 900 C shows no presence of carbonate phase in XRD results but its presence is detected by FITR Spectra. Can anybody comment on what might be the reasons for the differing results and if possible suggest some literature for the same.

Most certainly if the carbonate is amorphous. See for example the following publication -

XRD gives information of only crystal structure and not about the functional group.

It is possible if the carbonate phase is amorphous. Do you handle samples after calcination in an inert atmosphere glovebox? Is carbon dioxide adsorption on the surface of samples or chemical interaction with them excluded? If not, then you can see carbonates from the surface layer on the FTIR Spectra. As for the carbonates in the sample, it is unlikely that they were preserved after calcination at such a high temperature.
