Water treatment methods are an option for dealing with increasing salt content in places at risk such as coastal areas relying on aquifers for drinking. Sea-level rise is a major threat to freshwater resources in a number of countries including small island nations and both developing and developed countries. One of the options is desalination. However, a desalination plant requires substantial investment towards building and operation which could be costly and may not be affordable to poor countries. Due to relatively high energy consumption, the costs of desalinating sea water are generally higher than the alternatives. There are two major environmental concerns from desalination, one is greenhouse gas emissions (from significant energy use) and the other is related to discharge of brine which can damage the local ecosystem and biodiversity.

Question: Can desalination plant be a solution for poor countries affected by sea-level rise? (Any weblinks or references relevant to this topic would be much appreciated)
