Good body condition scores at calving (3.5 points; scale 1 to 5) are the most important factor for high fertility in beef cows, especially if under tropical grassland (C4) consumption.

In Brazil, springtime (October to December - Southern hemisphere) breeding season is widely adopted. This imposes birth concentration during the winter months, and despite the possibility of good body condition at calving, it is not long maintained due to winter lactation (calf suckling). The result is a low body condition at breeding and subsequent increase of the postpartum anestrous length.

In this way, a summer-autumnal (March to May - Southern hemisphere) breeding season, employed during 18 years in a Nellore herd of São Manuel Farm - Unesp - Botucatu, was of great success: 3.5 points body condition scores at calving, 87% of births, 85% of weaning, with 170kg and 187kg of weaning weight (205 days) respectively for females and males.
