In order to correctly apply a boundary conditions of simple shear a possible solution is to impose the so called Periodic Boundary Condition (PBC). You can find an analytical formulation of this boundary condition in the following paper:

Micromechanical analysis of polymer composites reinforced by unidirectional fibres: Part II – Micromechanical analyses by A.R. Melro,  P.P. Camanho, F.M. Andrade Pires, S.T. Pinho.

or in this book:

Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials using Abaqus, by E.J. Barbero.

For the numerical implementation you should create a set for each edges and vertices  (since you have a 2D models) of your model, and for each of them extract a set for every node contained on them  and then create an equation for  each corresponding node on the opposite  edges. I think that the knowledge of python scripting for the implementation of these condition can be helpfull.

Thank you very much, I will look into periodic BC. I actually tried to constrain group of nodes in left hand side to follow movements of respective nodes in left. But it did not work well. I also tried applying rotation to vertical edges(UR3), but it did not cause any deformation as well.

please try to select one point of top horizontal point and create set for it and name it master and create another set (slave) for the rest of top points. then apply horizontal displacement at the master point only. then use constrain equation as

-1       slave   DOF (direction of horizontal)

1       master   DOF (horizontal)

if you still have problem please let me know and give the dimensions and details of your model then I will try to solve it

I tried with your method as well. Still vertical edges are not straight. Horizontal strain is not zero. I have attached the result for you to have a look at.

ok i forget to tell you that repeat constrain equation in vertical direction for each horizontal row of nodes (you do seme as in top horizontal row of nodes). after you do please send me the image.

I did what you advised. It seems to work fine. eps11=0 and both vertical and horizonatl edges are straight.

I am tried elastic first, but for elastic it seems S11,S22,S33 do not change at all. Only S12 chages.

For MC plastic model, S11 and S33 also change with S12.

I think it is correct. Thank you very much.

But I wonder there is any other means of doing that for a finer mesh.

yes you can try adding a rigid frame elements at both vertical edges.and deletet lat constrained equations

I am also trying to implement the simple shear problem in Abaqus/Standard. Im getting the error: Too many increaments needed to complete the step. I've read your thread, and I have a question: What magnitude of horizontal displacement do you impose on the master nodes in the middle rows?
