I think, in many cases, strong family relations empower researchers to carry out scientific projects. I can testify that my family has given me tremendous support in my scholarly endeavors.
Yes it happens in certain cases but if there is a will there is a way. A researcher with a strong willpower definitely cannot be put down by any hurdles. On the contrary an encouraging family can be a huge boost for any researcher to achieve his/her goals.
Family relations can sometimes cause problems concerning education. In certain cultures, for example, girls are deprived from attending educational systems. However, when we talk about researchers, we are addressing a professional prototype with a university degree who strongly believes in the merits of education and research. On this basis, family relations cannot affect a researcher's interest in conducting research.
Today you just read the life history of one scientist:
Yellapragada Subbarow (12 January 1895 – 8 August 1948).
Born in a very orthodox poor family in southern part of India.
In childhood, he was not an extra ordinary student.
His elder brother, who supplied money of his education (the amount of which was beyond the reach of his income), died due to Tropical Sprue.
That lead Subbarow to find cause and treatment of that disease.
He decide to perform research on that disease in USA. His wife was very very conservative and do not want to go with him crossing the kalapani (sea) to USA.
Dr. Subbarow left his family forever and went to USA for research.
He discovered the function of adenosine triphosphate as an energy source in the cell, developed methotrexate for the treatment of cancer and discovered a broad spectrum antibiotic Auromycin and Tetracycline.
My answer is both Yes and No. It depends on the kind of family; with supportive families, a researcher can go places whereas with very demanding family members, one may not be able to able to achieve much. Families are very important part of a person's life. One should never choose either family or research; a balance is the key to a successful life.
