Hi Carolin Auschra,

in my opinion it would be easier to use a more generic visualization tool for graphs analysis that would accept more open and generic data formats. Then you could not only merge input files, but also combine graphs coming from different sources. WOSViewer is great, but has limited scenarios of analysis.

thank you for sharing your thoughts. We have also considered using another tool, for instance a software to map social networks. However, we are not sure how we can merge the reference list of certain articles in one data file without a lot of manual data cleaning.

May I ask you which more generic viszualization tool for graphs you have in mind?

Dear Carolin,

Thank you for your question; I have been struggling with this also.

I'm a PhD student and currently working on a literature review on networks, so I wished to insert a citation network in my paper.

I imported search results from Web of Science, PubMed and Business Source in my reference manager and converted the complete list to a Bibtex file once I had DOI's for all of them. I think it is possible to import a Bibtex file in Citnetexplorer or Vosviewer.

However, some articles in PubMed don't appear to have a DOI, only a PubMed identifier, so for this subset I haven't found a solution yet. I happily follow your answer and hope someone else can help :-)

I did the same what works great for keyword and co-authorship analysis. However, differnt forms of citation analysis seem to be problematic as both citations and cited references are missing in this approach.

I also tried to download this information via API lists that can be imported into VosViewer. However, articles without DOI seem to stay not eligable for download via APIs. And in addition, I made the experience that sources like Crossref are more incomplete than WoS, causing - in my case - very missleding results.

It seems that we can, at the moment, only hope for fast technical advancments or need to spend a lot of time with handcleaning.

For more generic graph visualizations you may want to consider Gephi, a very intuitive, easy, open source network analysis tool. "download gephi" and you will find it via google as well as dozens of tutorials. Regards!
