According to my/our 44 years expertise in mathematical modeling + simulations, design, engineering, realization and commissioning of many hundreds of large industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTP's), circular clarifiers are most efficient in removing TSS = total suspended SOLIDS with related COD, BOD and nutrients.

However TDS = total DISSOLVED solids can NOT be removed by clarifiers unless (part of) this TDS has been converted upstream to TSS e.g. by (bio)chemical precipitation or adsorption to TSS.

As engineers developing new and upgrading existing large WWTP's , we are not really focused on academic research and publications.

For modeling and design of so called "seconday" clarifiers (after biological treatment), we apply the solid flux theory along with bioflocculation and hydraulic distribution in circular clarifiers as to achieve super-clarification by the sludge blanket.

A good reference work for "seconday" clarifiers is: "Secondary Settling Tanks: theory, modelling, design and operation" published by IWA (formerly IAWQ) as Scientific and Technical Report No. 6. (1997, ISBN 1 900222 03 5).

Practically, nothing for TDS. For TSS, I suggest circular type. However, the implementation of rectangular (like tube settler) and the conventional circular type depend upon the HRT you required for efficient settling of the TSS.
