I am studying about bat pollination in Thailand. I would like to know the status of this system in India. Can anyone give me some information from India and Srilanka. I guess the tropical system of there might have some cases.
As per my knowledge, S.Devy and T. Ganesh in Atree work on pollination by mammals. You can get a idea from them. Bat pollination has been studied in the western ghats, but not probably in himalayas
Heyy just out of curiosity..would like to knw do bats actually pollinate? as per Pushan Chakraborty..there is pollination by mammals ..Really curious to know how does it occur? Please tell me..Thanks :)
@Viraj, Bat do pollination and is more specialized than insect pollination system. The floral biology of such flower are found suit to bat foraging - example Nocturnal blooming and anthesis, short floral longevity. The nectar position and stigma position is quite apart in some cases. In fact is lesser but more specific ecological service throughout the tropics.
I heard there is one plant whose seed is made for ghee or oil in India ( Indian butter plant) is that bat dependent ? There might be some medicinal plants too ?
@Viraj : many bats and other mammals feed on nectar/pollen of flowers (most cases on trees and nocturnal). As mammals are hairy, the pollen gets adhere to the body and pollination occurs when they move to other flowers of same species. In some cases, they feed on the insects visiting the flowers and eventually act as pollinators.
