I was formed in an academic environment where people could do research in almost anything that seemed interesting. In those days, working in basic research was so much fun and equally valuable as working in applied research. However, the world we are living in today seems a more difficult one: basically less money for research and more urgent problems (e.g. biodiversity crisis and health issues) to solve. This makes me wonder whether more scientists that still do basic science, should divert their efforts to contribute to solve such problems. I wonder whether other colleagues feel the same.
