Sometimes abbreviations are more common than we ever thought. We can at least say some abbreviations are more common than others, and they appear frequently on literature. However, sometimes, the names are abbreviated and is one of the most difficult to understand. Although, there some common rules to it.
Are there more common abbreviations other than these ones? Var, spp, sp. Are there similar abbreviations to these ones?

Could you also provide information, like books, papers explaining the basics regarding taxonomy?
I would like to give examples on taxonomy, for an explanation to be given. If anyone would like to set there own questions for an explanation to be given on taxonomy of different species, please feel free to do so.

var = variety, depending on the use. It also might refer to variation.
sp. = species. But the identity of the species is unknown. Or the author does not want to reveal the real name.
spp. = more than one species. Not known or not revealed.

Hello Angeles; I've seen a couple more in the ant literature.
1. cf = with regard to.
2. nr = near. (an undescribed taxon that seems to be close to another, named, one.)
I've only seen these notations in context - not in any glossary.

How is basionym related to taxonomy? Iunderstnd it is a minor catwgory, though I don't know

In the scientific name of organisms, basionym or basyonym[1][2] means the original name on which a new name is based; the author citation of the new name should include the authors of the basionym in parentheses. The term original combination or protonym is used in the same way in zoology.[citation needed] Bacteriology uses a similar term, basonym, spelled without an i.[3]

there is a name of a sponge called Aka n. sp., although I don't think this is a name of a specie. Does this mean the names do not need to be names?

The name Aka is the genus name. The name is capitalized and italicized. That specifies the genus. At the end of the title you see Aka cryptica. The sp. nov. note indicates that this is a new species that is described in this paper. in your note, you indicate n. sp. That also means "new species". Basionym is that name on which the correct name is based.

The standard abbreviation of subspecies is subsp. Some authors also use ssp.

Hello Ma. The complete name is Chrysanthemum x morifolium Ramat. The plant has been in cultivation and has been hybridized with so many other members of the genus that a wild ancestor has not been specified. Hi Ma; The variety designation for species in this context is regularly encountered in agriculture and in microbiology. Intensively studied species often show a large amount of genetic variation and the variety designations are a convenient way to unambiguously identify which genetic type is being discussed. As an example, that proliferation of varieties has occurred with the Covid-19 virus. Those variety designations are not part of the formal taxonomy. Cheers, Jim Des Lauriers
