It is surprising that many programs, that have won prizes in the geometric processing (but not only), exhibit several problems, if used in the real life. They cannot often be compiled on any platform, there are bugs, no documentation, sudden crashes. What is your opinion about this? Is a Software Award valid, if it is related to a conference?

yeah, sometimes I also share the same feelings with you. My explanation for this phenomenon is: developing a software is one thing and maintaining it is another thing. I have to admit that some programs were really awesome at that moment when the team created them. However, a good program needs frequently maintaining, i.e. testing and fixing bugs, updating to the new toolchains and platforms etc. Not just in the academic scope, even in the industry a program would quickly become useless once it is abandoned by its company.
