@David, read the terms and conditions of University grant, as well as the same of GNU/GPL operating system! The sentence "Developers who write software can release it under the terms of the GNU GPL ". Also see the link bellow. Maybe, You should consult an expert for Copyrightc! Good luck!

Dear David,

As said by Dr. Ljubomir, this can be resolved by an expert of Copyright. But, at my best of my knowledge if the software is released as GPL, this means that any interest earned by your university, especially that you have earned a grant from it. Then, what is your problem if you put this software on a workstation, owned by the University? I think this can be done with anything that you loose. Good luck!

The answer is normally in your grant contract. If it is not, then it is ruled by the Italian law. For instance, my contract says that the University has rights on the software, so I have to ask for permissions when I want to put software in GPL (or other copyleft licenses). Otherwise, most European laws foresee that a PhD grantee, because he is a student, keeps the ownership of his software (but an employee usually does not.)

Thank you for your answers. I discussed yesterday with offices. Basically I can put software in GPL and it remains mine. The problem is the distribution. It must be exposed on any PC of the university like a webpage of our research group. SourceForge is not enough since it is a third party. The university role must be clear. This is Italy friends.
