I am not sure what vehicle should be good for ATRA IP injections? First it is dissolved in DMSO or EtOH. The problem is that the stock in DMSO makes precipitate with PBS or saline upon dilution. On the other hand, solubility is much less in EtOH in 10 mM, so we have to inject 100 microlitre of 100% EtOH. We don't want to use both 100 microlitre DMSO or EtOH. Can somebody suggest me a better option?
Try dissolving directly in PBS or normal saline that has been pre-warmed to between 40-50oC with vigorous shaking. If it works (dissolves), then allow it cool down to about room temperature before injecting
DMSO, an antioxidant ( scavenger of hydroxyl radicals, can be even injected i.v. in animals. So far your i.p. injections you may use it as such provided dose is not high. Secondly, you may try making emulsion by sonication of mixture of DMSO and PBS.
Dr. Atawodi: Thank you for your reply. I tried it but ATRA wouldn't dissolve in PBS or saline even at higher temp since it is a hydrophobic structure.
Dr. Khanduja: Thank you for your reply. I tried to even mix ATRA in 1:1 ratio of DMSO and PBS or DMSO: saline, but both gives a solid precipitate. So, I don't have another option other than injecting 100 microlitre of DMSO. I hope it should be fine. If you have additional suggestions, please let me know.

Since you are going to use it for i.p.injection, make sure of its purity. This you can check by keeping a small lot in the refrigerator. If it crystallizes and nothing is at the bottom then it is pure. Some times one can even take out the crystals for use.
