Cancer screenings continue to be a sources of discourse and discussion among the population; particularly healthcare providers. There is one component that is not discussed enough as it relates to screening mammography. The component of when to begin screening has to take into consideration the ethnicity of the person. Health disparities needs to be more inclusive of this discussion. It is recommended that any baseline cancer screenings should be done some 10 years earlier if there is a diagnosis of cancer in a direct line family member. Baseline mammography should be done at age 40-45. This is particularly important for African American women and other high risk groups. The 5-10 year recommendation by ACS is taking into consideration if there was a diagnosis in direct line family member.
