As researchers using ASTM C 1012 for sulfate resistance test for concrete. The size of the cube is 100 x 100 x 100 mm. But ASTM C 1012 gives guidelines for mortar sulfate resistance. Can anyone suggest me about this discrepancy and send me related reference?.

Hi Raju, It is important to consider that the ASTM C1012 test is not for the assessment of mortar.
ASTM C1012 / C1012M - 15 "Standard Test Method for Length Change of Hydraulic-Cement Mortars Exposed to a Sulfate Solution" is the test method for assessing the performance of sulfate resistance cement in terms of chemical resistance to the sulfate environment. The mechanical properties of cement such as cement strength, shrinkage, expansion,... are tested through mortar testing using standard sand and fixed flow/W:C ratio.
However, when concrete is considered, both the physical resistance of concrete to the penetration and the chemical resistance of the concrete to the deleterious sulfate reactions are important attributes of sulfate resisting concrete.
Thus, factors influencing the permeability and surface porosity of the concrete and the chemical resistance of cement are prime performance parameters of concrete exposed to sulfate attack.
Considering the C3A and gypsum content of cement and SCM content of blended cements, different types of sulfate reactions with different mechanisms such as ettringite formation, gypsum formation, and thaumasite formation are needed to be understood. they can be assessed by assessing chemical performance of cement using mortar bar test.
However, sulfate attack resistance of concrete members is not only affected by the chemical resistance of cement. Other parameters such as characteristic strength, minimum rebars minimum cover, minimum cementitious content, concrete permeability and maximum water–cementitious ratio are the main factors that are specified by specifications for sulfate resistance concrete, depending on the exposure classification (based on SO4 ml/L or % in groundwater or soil).
The above mentioned particular characteristics can be tested for durable grade concrete, and the test results can be compared with the minimum requirements of specifications for different exposure conditions.

There is no current standard for testing concrete resistance to sulfate attack. Existing standards come to evaluate the resistance of cementitious materials to chemical sulfate attack. The resistance of concrete to chemical sulfate attack depends on the resistance of cementitious materials to chemical sulfate attack and permeability, but then there is physical sulfate attack too. There is no standard to evaluate physical sulfate attack, but it also depends on permeability.

Furthermore, if you want to find the resistance of concrete to sulfate attack, you have to get your own model. Remember that permeability is an important factor. Water cement ratio is a critical factor for concrete quality and hence its durability. Only comparative studies can be made in the case of concrete.
