To measure the joint shear deformation in beam-column joint, the LVDT is diagonally placed in a joint. I have an LVDT with least count .01mm. Is this sufficient to measure the deformation in a joint or I need to arrange other LVDT of least count less than .01mm.

The least count of instruments used for measuring any parameter during testing is dependent on the behavior characteristics of the test specimen and the range of readings obtained till failure. The least count must be less than 10 % of the failure strain.

Dear Raju.
I think it will be better if you measure displacements in both directions, independently.
This will permit you to evaluate displacements in the beam and in colun, separately.
The question is the variation in inertia.
