Using GTM in ESL and EFL classes depends on the purpose of teaching; it is not just the choice of the teacher. The learners' level, classroom facilities available, time factor and the target language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) help to decide and choose the teaching method. The demand of developing learners' speaking skill motivated the institutes to set up modern decorated language classrooms and labs, and most of the language teachers stopped using GTM in their classes. The business demand of the academic market can also force the language teachers to do and not to do something. There is no doubt that GTM can enrich learners' linguistic and cultural insights, but it is not possible when it is not a pressing need of the time.
I think while the grammar-translation method may have some potential to enrich learners' linguistic and cultural insights, it is often considered less effective in developing communicative language skills.
