I wish to know how best to convey my ideas scientifically in order to become a better researcher. i do believe carrying out a research and writing a research report are two different things.
As a young researcher, how can I develop excellent report writing skills that will help me in producing good manuscripts for publications.
In my personal opinion, after conducing a research you just need to do your best to start writing for publication. Regardless your submission is rejected or after rounds of critiques (I empathize how demotivated the feeling is after reading the reviewers' critiques) & required extensive amendments before being accepted etc., you will realize later that the process is helping you to develop the excellent report writing skills. You can learn a lot through the critiques from reviewers be it content, literature, methodology or even language grammar etc. As the saying goes "A good start is half way to success". Wishing you all the best.
As you have rightly said, carrying out the bench-work and writing a good manuscript are two very different things. To know how to write, you must keep reading what others had written. If you want to send your manuscript to a journal, it will be of great benefit to first check out the style and depth of writing that they appreciate, dont just send in your manuscript blindly. You must keep striving to step up your game by publishing in better journals, even though, it will be more tasking.Dont be satisfied with just publishing in low-end journals. You will receive a lot of 'reject', but they dont define you, look through the comments and improve your write-up, then resubmit in another good journal. All the best.
You can achieve that by becoming an 'apprentice' to people who have been writing good manuscripts. Also, fine-tuning your command of the English language will be of immense help.
Practice makes perfect. When there is an intention to publish research findings, the journal has to be identified. Initially, a peer-review journal can be the target, progressively one can aim for Scopus and then aim for an ISI publication. Once, the journal has been identified, its a good idea to write in accordance to the guidelines of the journal concerned as this will promote higher chance of acceptance. When you get feedback from the reviewers, do the needful as closely as possible to the suggestions but feel free to defend yourself if you are not in favour of the recommendation. In the case of your paper getting rejected, don't feel dejected but further get enthusiastic to do the needful editing and aim to send the paper to other journals. Determination is the key to achieve success as a researcher.
@all I sincerely appreciate your contributions and advice. Truly, reviewers comment can be very devastating for newbies in research publication. however, constant practice and continuous reading will sharpen once writing skills. i feel happy to have received all the comments. thank you all
