Since recent citations are more preferred in project write ups and publications. I wish to know how to classify a cited material as being old. Does this have to do with the information provided by the author(s), how long the manuscript has been published or otherwise. I would appreciate enlightenment in this regard.
It is unnecessary to classify in this way if you choose relevant good quality citations. Just cite all the papers in the usual way. Sometimes old is best! For example, who wouldn't want to cite Einstein, Linnaeus or Newton lol :)
@Andrew Paul, thanks. Meanwhile, a reviewer recently suggested the removal of one of the citations in my submitted manuscript. He specifically state that the reference was too old. How about that? could you please assist on how to respond to such an issue.
Perhaps there is un updated more recent paper dealing with the same issue, so try and find that one. Otherwise, if not, stick to your guns, but provide reasons why you want to keep it :)

The literature review should be both relevant and recent; if your reference is relevant sufficiently and if number of recent references are limited, I think the old reference should be included in the manuscript.
