Most of scientists are working in universities, but the time provided for teaching of under- or post-graduate students are usually much more than for research activities. Thus, I am wondering what is the best ratio for such activities for a productive scientist (is it 50 : 50, or not?).

I think 50% is a good ratio
Thanks Dr., I think the ratio depends on many factors such as various universities, and countries. Sure 50% is acceptable, but for an average research is (5 days for 4 hours per day) 20 hours per week is not enough to follow what's going on and produce articles
In China, this ratio is rather different and varies mainly with university and job category. Generally, the leaders and well known experts are too busy to give a class. There is no class required for them actually.
Thanks Zhang and Kirk, different schools with different ratios but as a scientist should you spend more time and interest in research than teaching. However, we may end with very classical teaching at universities.
