I had an experience to feed the green rice leafhopper by 2.5% sucrose in a plastic vial (3 cm in diameter and 3 cm in height) covered with an artificial membrane of stretched parafilm. In our lab. we use 25ml glass beakers covered in parafilm for rearing aphids on artificial diet. Works really well

We used 25ml plastic universals for rearing of various insects (hemipterans, thysanopterans). We removed the lid and covered with a suitably-sized mesh for containment/ventillation (e.g. cut-up net curtain). Then for feeding you can just invert multiple tubes over a large pool of Parafilm-covered food without having to remove the mesh. The insects should be able to feed through the mesh and reach the Parafilm. Good luck.

From my experience, the feeding chamber can be any vial (glass or plastic) open from both ends, one end stands on a Petri dish to house the insects and the other end is covered with stretched parafilm membrane. It is important that the parafilm membrane has to be double stretch (stretchable from all sides) in order that the insect stylet can probe successfully. The drop of sucrose solution (5-10%) is deposited onto the outside surface of the membrane and spread by a glass slide (to reduce surface tension) with a thin wire ring in between to allow a space for feeding.

Hi, I published a paper on artificial diet and feeding chamber for leafhoppers, please check it out, it described the feeding chamber that i used etc. Any size container with the liquid diet in between the stretched parafilm will work, also remember that on just 5% sucrose solution leafhopper will not survive very long, only slightly longer that on water alone.
