I have done functionalisation of graphene oxide with both aromatic and aliphatic diamines. Then I added those fGO to epoxy to make composite materials. I have thought about the bi-functionality of the diamines as one of the possible reasons along with the extra stability of delocalisation in benzene ring. But would like to know any other more logical explanation behind this increase in mechanical property. Thanks.
This might be related to the Pi-Pi stacking of the aromatic rings with the graphene oxide rings. In chemistry, pi stacking (also called π–π stacking) refers to attractive, noncovalent interactions between aromatic rings, since they contain pi bonds. Mohmmad Kooti above has a great response. I have found that there is a redshift in the Raman spectrum of MWCNT epoxy composites ~820 cm-1 which indicates interactions between the epoxy and the MWCNT (out of plane asymmetric benzene deformation). Red or blue shifts of the polymer spectrum and the GO spectrum should give you some information of the polymer - GO interactions (collect Raman spectra of the composites and the raw materials). You may also have better dispersion of the nano-material with the aromatic functionalized GO compared to the aliphatic.
