University faculty are expected to be loyal to their university, but I know many faculty members who are much more focused on their own career, promotion, or prestige, and not really as loyal to their institution. Some feel responsibility to their students, but not really to the overall university.

What do you think is the right balance?  Loyal to your school, over yourself?  Loyal to your own career over your school?  Loyal to your students over yourself OR your school?

What do you think is the best balance of loyalty? Please explain why.
