Langlois, G. (2014) Meaning in the Age of Social Media, New York, NY: Palgrave Macmillan
Although "What Matters" by Flach and Voorhorst is not directly about semiotics, the book has quite a bit to say about semiotics that I found new and quite interesting. It might be worth looking at.

The foundation is surely de Saussure, Barthes, Budrillard and Eco. From the philosophical aspect is Peirce and Derrida.
I prefer the European semiotic school.
I was just reviewing the Oxford Bibliography and was surprised to find the Soren Brier's (2008) Cybersemiotics: Why Information is Not Enough!. Toronto: University of Toronto Press was not mentioned. This is without a doubt the most important look at semiotics in the last twenty years! I highly recommend it.
