Autonomous driving can certainly benefit from such learning, so the vehicle becomes safer with experience. Just like human drivers do, only better, because such algorithms wouldn't be encumbered with emotions, anxieties, distractions, fatigue, panic, and so on.

We already have systems available to the public, that take on some of these characteristics. For instance, in cars, modern engine controls and stability controls. These systems are always testing the limits, always learning, and reacting to conditions right now multiple times faster than humans can. Perhaps the familiarity we have with some of these modern controls makes us dismiss them. But hey. Imagine what someone would have thought just 50 years ago, about cars that can save themselves from skidding out of control, or can stop faster than that panicked human standing on the brakes, or can parallel park all  by themselves, or can constantly be tweaking the spark advance, to keep the engine always on the verge of pinging? All of these tasks accomplished not in some totally pre-programmed way, but by taking existing conditions into account, in real time.

Although some of what passes off as AI is not much more than rule-based programming. Big, nested, logical if statements, that a user would think behave like AI. Then again, isn't that a lot of what human intelligence is? We build a database of effects and their causes, and we act accordingly?

"Embedded AI" is currently one of the buzzwords. For example, online recommender systems use data models trained with machine learning to cluster, select and rank the results. "Embedded AI" will be in the "back.-end" of the software so the user won't even be aware of it. In terms of job loss, some knowledge workers could be at risk !

Certainly, I agree with the concept that the AI means totally different things to different people. In some cases, considering faster reaction in critical situations (for humans), it is very helpful and needed. However, the "thinking" range is very limited. It is based on defined set of rules (mined or given by an expert) and sometimes structured in a self-adopting ("learning") process working only in a defined area.

Everybody uses such AI for example in digital cameras and automatic parking systems.

On the other hand if we consider machines mining data and adopting itself to optimize resources, it is dangerous. The real world is much more complicated than even a thousands of parameters given as an input into an AI system. Consider for example an automated AI system in human resources or other decisive division of human activity. Analysis ripped of the human aspect in many cases can be "unfair" or just give wrong results, of course in human aspect.

Machines are stronger, in many cases a way faster than humans. Apply an extraordinary complex AI software on that physical layer, without emotions, without doubts, and it can infer that a human is a nothing more than a bug mindlessly consuming planet resources ( :-) forgive me the apocalyptic view of SF-movies ).

Lately, more and more often, I think about current, tremendously galloping world and I ask myself "do we really always need this ?". Faster, better, more efficient. Would You rather live in a future world surrounded by automated solutions or humans ? Personally I choose humans :-)

Most of the advances in AI are on the software side and with their practical capabilities overhyped too. Truly impacting 'traditional' manual work (agriculture, crafts) will need advances in firmware. And although something like a fruit-picking AI that would recognize which fruits are ripe and pick only those, without harming the rest, seems perfectly viable, I don't hear of one being built. As it stands, you could be lucky if your smartphone can tell you that the tree you just snapped a photo of is a peach tree. For many manual tasks that involve a degree of judgement, human labor is still the most economic solution. As for a fruit-picking AI that would strike for better wages... well, I don't know how far we are from those -should we ever have them. But if we do, I guess we will deal with them the way we do with human strikers.  

Yes. That is the current SOTA. However, we discuss the future. Remember what smartphones could do 10 years ago ? Now a very compact devices can easily record and process 4K video streams. It is so great computational power that was impossible to gain just a couple of years ago for such small devices. The technology sometimes needs just a little change of thinking and the revolution begins. We will see what the future brings ...

As ancient old bloke with a research background in speech and signal processing and somewhat reluctantly being involved for more years than I care to mention in 'futurology' , I may not be the best person to reply to your question, but here goes anyway:

First of all, if you can genuinely define 'intelligence' whether human or artificial, you much be one of the very few. If instead you are asking will there be algorithms that will make it possible to replace a significant percentage of the workforce, then the answer must be yes, but it's important not to fall into an over-simplified clever versus routine job paradigm. For instance, I like to classify robotic solutions into 3 categories: industrial/commercial, agricultural, domestic. The first was easy to do, the second has been much harder, but have you ever seen a robot tidy up after a wild party, yet the last is commonly classified as low skill level? At present time I'd argue that computers with or without deep learning AI, are powerful giants rather than brilliant brains: they can handle large quantities of data at great speed,and extract patterns too interrelated than  humans can, but whether or not this is a sign or definition of 'intelligence' seems to me doubtful. Perhaps however, the reason they may well replace some jobs is that rather than the machines having great 'artificial intelligence', it is that lots of jobs, senior or junior, only require 'human stupidity''.

Speaking about job replacements. It is an interesting survey, however i want to add something to think about. Several years ago we hosted a conference where prof. Hamido Fujita form Japan talked about a project, as far as I remember it was funded by the Government of Japan, solving a problem of long lines in medical facilities. They worked on an automated system "speaking" with a patient (a system visualized a 3d doctor person talking to the patient) to preliminary decide about the further treatment. Of course at the end of the road there was a real doctor who made the final decision, however it was designed to "filter" all the easy cases and group very common problems to speed up the service.

Forgive me but I do not remember if the system was deployed somewhere after tests or if it is still in progress, but it shows where we are going ...

The promises of the AI have reached their limits. At present, new ideas are scarce. The current offer incorporates the ideas of the 70s and 80s.

The future requires new paradigms of computation and a break with the science of the 1940s. Necessarily these paradigms have to do with biological components. Unfortunately, currently IT marketing resells by disguising the old concepts. The future is waiting for a real ontological break to revisit the fundamentals of AI.

We are seeing huge automation in every field which is a outcome of some sort of AI. However, still we are away from real AI. But for sure success of AI will result in job loss at large scale in every sector may it be Industry or Transportation like driver-less vehicles. So government must try to accommodate the people who will loss job due to AI. However more dangerous aspect of AI is the AI which will create it own AI that can't be understood and controlled by humans. Recent example was FB chat-bots when they started communicating in their own language that FB scientist never taught them and went out of control. FB was forced switch them off. Also recently Elon Musk, Bill Gate Steven Hawkins all at different platforms warned that AI can be destructive and need to be regulated strictly. Even recently Russian president Putin told reporters, country who is be best in AI will rule the future world. 

We know that humans and computers have different creativity blind spots, they should work together to uncover as many unsolved problems as possible. Human blind spots have been well-studied and algorithms have been devised to help counteract them. Humans can help counteract the newly proven computer limitations. Together, humans and computers can achieve a state of super-creativity that neither partner can reach alone but they need an interface to record the creative steps of each partner.

Hence AI can hep to achieve the super creativity stage and actually now it is at the take off state of AI into Business. The only thing we need to keep in mind that it should not be out of control of humans, It needs to be in our control. And this is application specific, for some it will benefit drastically without impacting a lot.

It is certain that the future is based on developments within AI. But in this context, the factor of human error may be important in success of AI systems in the future. Because of that, some research efforts regarding safe AI or human-compatible AI should be don accordingly more. I think the future of AI is also not clear too much because the way of developing may be different for a superintelligence.

Will AI ever exist? Only in name. A computer can only do what it is told to do (even with coding errors considered). This is the harbinger of what AI can possibly become at best.

The best AI could ever do is simulate a pattern that could be labeled as "intelligent." AI has no means to drive itself into things like creativity, freedom of choice, independent thinking, etc. Every computer statement - even random number generation - is based on a predictable choice that has already been made for the computer by a human. The only thing left for AI is to simulate the appearance of intelligence by means of the greater processing power a computer provides. Regardless of how many calculations a computer can make, they will still be dependent upon the core, which is that a human already coded (or even mis-coded) how they will work. (Incidentally, coding errors work much like mutations: mutations always make a living thing die, they don't ever make it better.)

Aside from all this, the main sticky point here - as someone already pointed out - is that we have a very poor understanding of what "intelligence" means. We have come to realize that a person can be intelligent in one small niche and not at all intelligent in others. Intelligence may be exhibited in a person as an overarching way of thinking, but the identification of intelligence rests in identifying a single narrow application as having been "intelligent." Historically, when something considered "intelligent" gains a methodical way of being derived, it is then no longer considered intelligent, further muddying the water on what the heck do we mean when we say "that was intelligent."

Alan Turing defined AI as when a computer can exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human. If you break that down into practice, it means that all you have to do to make an "intelligent" computer is to find someone gullible enough to believe it. The lack of an objective definition - made extremely difficult due to all the subjective evaluations involved by the observing human - is the main reason why AI has made little progress. As a result, researchers focus on useful practical results instead of the holy grail of making AI "intelligent."

Having a task done by a computer, is the effective proof that it is not necessary to be intelligent to do it.  It is the anti-thesis of intelligence.  When will the anti-thesis become the thesis? Never.  

Psychologist, educationalist, behaviourists are still arguing of how to define intelligence. If intelligence is defined as finding a solution to a problem, then AI can already do that in many ways well. Input from human are still required. In my opinion it is a very important point, otherwise we may have the Terminator or Prometheus (i.e. the psychotic robot).  We need to install what Isaac Asimov has warned us about.

I do not think hoovering the floor is a very deep demonstration of intelligence. Famously this robot cannot detect whether it is a cat or a furniture.

Asimov's three laws are terribly subjective.

As an AI-equipped robot can certainly color canvas pieces, as long as, it not: will imagine, will invented and will paint a artwork like Paplo Picasso's Guernica, it is and will always be a stupid machine.

Artificial Intelligence has a future and needs adapting. Psychologists have yet to agree between themselves what intelligence is and how it can be demonstrated.

At the present time AI is automated some activities that would take a long time and resources to human to complete. It is also very good at identifying some patterns between some unrelated data from the human viewpoint. It can extend the human design and patterns identification.

I share the same opinion as those stated by computer scientists and psychologists in the 1970s. They dreamed and formalised some framework to solve some actual problems. A set of steps needed to be discovered by a computer system. This has led to the development of the algorithm selection problem.

This important links has been lost within the evolution computation and machine learning community. The future should look back to the inspiration of the past scientist and adapt itself to assist more effectively humans in solving important problems such as ecological and sharing more effectively the planet resources.

AI needs to produce too something that human can understand instead than some very complex programs. Then we could perhaps prevent the Terminator and becoming more a world described by Isaac Asimov.

Definitely, AI is evolving and become part and parcel of everything such as online recommender systems, deep learning/machine learning, Intelligent computing and extra.
