Does the increasing resolution of marine habitats' maps and the data collected on marine species' distribution allow to produce some real seascape ecology analysis, i.e. linking structure and function at a large spatial scale?
Could it be possible to use the tools recently developed in landscape ecology, e.g. landscape graphs, and apply it to marine habitats?
Could it be the opportunity to develop new conservation tools intuitively comprehensible for managers ?

(french version below) In my opinion, more the analysis are done on a large scale, the harder it is to have a clear and intercalibrated data. Consideration and large-scale phenomena study yet demand a better contextualization of each situation, and weighting the importance of each of these situations according to their "systemic" importance. This contextualisation requires the contribution of a large number of data producers in different disciplines. But the terms of descriptive values of this context decrease when the scale increases. This pooling all-out data is not for tomorrow.
Under the IndexMed consortium, we are working to put in place tools and heterogeneous data mining methods in ecology (graphs, clustering, artificial intelligence). We prepare answers to call for National and European project.

A mon avis, plus l'analyse est faite à large échelle, plus il est difficile d'avoir une donnée précise et intercalibrée. La prise en compte et l'étude de phénomènes à grande échelle demande pourtant une contextualisation plus précise de chaque situation, et une pondération de l'importance de chacune de ces situations en fonction de leur importance "systémique". Cette contextualisation passe par la contribution d'un grand nombre de producteurs de données dans différentes disciplines. Pourtant, les modalités des valeurs descriptives de ce contexte diminuent lorsque l'échelle augmente. Cette mise en commun tout azimut des données n'est pas pour demain.
Dans le cadre du consortium IndexMed, nous travaillons à la mise en place d'outils et de méthodes de fouille de données hétérogènes en écologie (graphes, clustering, intelligence articficielle). Nous préparons des réponses à appel à projet européens.

Mr. David has provided ample information. As far as I know, the ecology of marine system is too complicated. What has been mapped so far, give some information on what is happening at the surficial sediment. We have to know the inter-relationships far deeper into the sediment. The spatial distribution does give us some information but it is not enough for seascape ecology analysis.
