Plagiarism is a serious problem in publication. It is the intention not to cite others work. It is mostly the use of other people’s ideas and words without giving the original author appropriate acknowledgement. Another form of ghostwriting is "faking or camouflaging" other writing or publication as a way of "writers' laundering. This practice is known as ghostwriting which hiring a writer (or writers) to write an anonymous article or a piece of work for someone else and publish without acknowledgment.
Michael - there are many anti-plagiarism software's on the market. Perhaps the market leader is EndNote.
Most of international publishers and journals use iThenticate for assessing for text overlap. Turnitin is commonly used in for student assignments.
Ahtisham - many thanks. Turnitin is what I meant - not EndNote which is a reference manager. My mind must have been on something else!!

Recently we were rejected by a top journal saying higher plagiarism. They used iThenticate for detecting our paper and the percentage they said 25%. But we are sure that we didn't take much from literature. Therefore we check with Turnitin afterwards for our curiosity. It was just 8%. I don't know whether those systems have different detecting technologies.
Roshan Nimantha iThenticate covers much more literature as it includes all the published articles and grey literature. Turnitin, on the other hand, is a database for student assignments and google sources. It is also possible that the journal did exclude the reference list when they ran your paper through iThenticate. If they rejected your paper based on the text match percentage, didn't they provide you the iThenticate report?
Thanks for your feedback Younas. The reference list wasn't inside the manuscript as they asked to separate to a different file. As you said, the comprehensiveness of the iTthenticate may go the percentage 25%. However they didn't give us the report, but rejected without having second chance unfortunately.
Dear Fellow Rgators
It is noted with thanks for all your valuable inputs in this regard but Turnitin/ iThenticate software programmes which is very expensive. Universities cannot cope with all the costly increases using this program to detect plagiarism yearly. What do you think about Grammarly? Or do you perhaps got other software programs.
In my university, we are using the software URKUND. This checks the document with sources from the Internet and their own database (documents uploaded by the Urkund users). I working well for us so far.
For those who suggested using a software, I advice them to be careful and do it themselves as no trusted software is available to paraphrase sentences without changing it's meaning. Paraphrasing, citation and using your own words and ideas are the key factors to avoid plagiarism.
There are software such as iThenticate to detect plagiarism, which is one of the best and most complete software in this field, but there is no software to detect shadowing. The only way to detect shadowing is using stylometric technique and using It is from Python programming language.Stylometer in fact analysis' on texts and determine authorship of disputed texts.For more information about stylometry, you can refer to Wikipedia and scientific articles in this field
