I want to know whether training apple and rest fruit trees as espalier or cordons gave acceptable results compared with traditional methods on the basis of economy and fruits characters and yield.
1. Aleksander, G. 2011. Effect of tree training system on yield and fruit quality of sweet cherry ‘Kordia’. Journal of fruit and ornamental plant research 19 (1): 79-83.
1. Ferree, D.C. 1994. Early performance of two apple cultivars in three training systems. Hort. Science 29(9): 1004-1007.
Espalier, cordon or tatura trellis system produces good quality fruit and all of the fruit is hand harvested. These training system also induce precocity in plants. However, for these system use of dwarfing rootstock is important. As far as yield is concerned yield per plant is definitely lower but it can be compensated by more number of plants per unit area and larger marketable fruits.
