Develop chatbots that use voice or visual interfaces to guide users through formal processes.

Also develop game-like elements to teach formal communication skills or navigate systems in an engaging way.

You can also develop Step-by-Step Instructions tools or apps that break down complex processes into easy-to-follow steps with minimal text.

Tanja Ubert Tanja,……Being enrolled in a masters program -and- in Design Research -and- having the success & result of your studies require a thesis on the subject is a handicap. Its blinding you to the day-to-day essence of the lives of a variety of people society and cultures* view as illiterate. With emphasis on our usual unackowledged cultural bias.

In my opinion, first get to know closely and personally the people you “think” are illiterate. Let them describe and show you what they want, need and hope for. Let them show you what being illiterate is in your culture in 2025

You may be surprised to find what they want, need and hope for is distinctly different than than you think. In my country helping in the "soup kitchens" allows close and personal contact with people who have a variety of needs Including being illiterate.

In my city we have numerous groups who can provide help. But they fail to address how the very people they want to help can also learn to understand web communication tools and then gain access. -

*You may also come to find illiteracy comes in many forms. And can span a very wide spectrum of levels of education, wealth, cultural and religious backgrounds. You may come to find that our concepts of the illiterate are unnecessarily bound in cultural and racial bias. -- In other words the very people you see as in need don’t “see” your concerns as valid. More to the point, illiteracy is rampant across all people. And those we single out as being unable to comprehend formal communicate often exhibit more common sense and clear, concise human contact than the intellectually abled.

I agree there are a lack of successful solutions. One reason is because people and cultures change and todays solutions are inadequate for different cultures in different times (voiced vs digital) . And 2nd, we don’t care about the illiterate. We prefer it if someone else takes care of them. We (most sadly) prefer, like any one who’s different and the physically and developmentally disabled, that they be separate from our day-to-day lives.
