What are the factors to be taken into consideration when modeling stone columns in FLAC 3D? Are there differences between the modeling of stone columns and piles?
Numerical modelling is always an approximation of expected mechanisms. To answer your question, driven pile have different mechannism than bored piles. Even in stone columns, rammed stone columns have different mechanism then vibro stone columns. First check what the installation process is?
For numerical modelling, stone columns increase the K0 value and you can use high K0 value for soil to model stone column.
For bored piles, there will be no such effects. Hope it helps!
You can use same continuum element to simulate both the pile and stone column..but only thing is to assign respective material properties to the element ..in case of pile another option is used to simulate the problem by with the use of embedded beam element..
Yes. If you use piles in FLAC 3D, about 10 parameters of every pile element should be determined with careful consideration, but bending moment and shearing force of every pile element can be obtained. If you use stone columns in FLAC 3D, only several parameters of stone zone should be determined easily, but bending moment and shearing force of every pile element can not be obtained. That is all.
