We know that many elderly persons already difficult to hear voice or sound because of their hair cells in organon corti degenerate caused by aging process.
Is it possible that radio sound "be proceed and translated" to temporal lobe signal so although there are problem from ear, mechanism from auricula to cocchlea (utriculus, sacculus, organon corti) or maybe also problem at os malleus, incus, stapes........ They (the elderly, maybe above 60 years old) still possible to listen to the radio.
Yes, elderly do experience deterioration in their hearing levels. The degree of hearing loss may vary among these. Also they tend to have more hearing loss for higher frequencies than lower frequencies.
There two solutions to their problem.
1. hearing aids- they amplify and compress the speech sounds into their hearing range, so that audibility and clarity of speech sounds are best. Modern hearing aids are also equipped with bluetooth / FM devices, so that you can connect TV / radio or any such devices. it helps in maintaining best perception of signals.
2. cochlear implants: when inner ear is damaged a lot, on routine testing called, pure tone audiometry, hearing levels are more than 90dB HL, cochlear implants are the best option. In this, electrodes are placed with in cochlear, and they transmit speech signals directly into auditory nerve.
there is no need to to directly stimulate temporal lobe . there are better and simpler options available.
note: in elderly TM, ossicles are not usually damaged. Inner ear- OHCs, or IHCs are damaged .
Auditory pathway from cochlear to temporal lobe is complex system, each part of it processes different aspects of incoming sounds and relay that information higher up. So this pathway is crucial for understanding of speech.
