I am currently using human vastis lateralus samples taken using a Bergstrom needle. The samples are currently stored in liquid nitrogen. I am hoping to use these samples for Western blots, looking at various muscle related proteins but some of the samples have blood contamination. Any advice on how best to process these samples for removal of blood would be greatly appreciated i.e. should we freeze dry samples first or wash the samples in a buffer?

centrifuging the sample with cold PBS before extraction of protein can be helpful in some cases
I usually wash them with PBS before the homogenization. And I use to mince them to disrupt later easily the tissue.
When you remove them from the liquid nitrogen and they are still super cold, you can also 'chip' off any blood on the surface with a scalpel blade, before following the advice above
