Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) provides public access to the results of global-scale modelling using four land surface models (LSMs). GLDAS provides information about land surface variables, for example soil moisture data, with 3-hour time* step and with spatial resolution equal 0.25 degree*.
GLDAS has been validated in numerous works and it is considered a roboust data source.
However, I wonder if there any counterparts / different projects that provides an output of global-scale modelling of soil moisture, that assimilate both in-situ and satellite data. I'm particularly interested in projects that use SMOS and/or SMAP data as one of its input or force data. As far as I know, although GLDAS uses satellite data (for example MODIS to define ocean mask), GLDAS do *not* use SMOS data.

I'm not sure, but maybe The Global Soil Wetness Project (http://cola.gmu.edu/gswp/) was something similar to GLDAS. It seems to be dead however.
Other that I found was reanalysis products such as ERA-Interim, MERRA, NCEP-DOE.
Regarding CCI, if I understand properly, they only merge active and passive products to one, they do not run sophisticated modelling such as GLDAS LSMs.
