Can anyone suggest articles on the methods of theory development? There are tons of articles on the methods of experimental design and statistical analysis. However, I have a hard time finding such *methodological articles* with the topic of *how to develop or describe a scientific theory*. To give one example, what I mean with methods of theory development: One can often read that a particular theory is more parsimonious (i.e., "better") than an alternative theory. I believe I know what parsimonious means in this context (i.e., requiring fewer assumptions). However, I wonder whether there are articles that describe, for example, what "parsimonious" means regarding the description of a theory? In the best case, such articles would also list other criteria for developing "good" theories.
It is quite likely that my question is related to a whole branch of philosophy. In that case, what would be good articles to start getting into this?
Thanks, Torsten
