What @Marković G. Đoko has observed is filled with insight about the question for this thread.    I definitely agree that a teacher must be a good (great!)  teacher before that teacher can command respect either inside or outside the workplace.

Teaching is one of the most challenging, interesting and energy-giving professions that I know of.   Every teacher must work long and hard to provide whatever is needed to carry forward a class and make the class worthwhile for students.    On the surface that may seem easy to an outsider but in reality satisfying the needs of a class is an ever-present as well as  rewarding challenge.

Teaching is one of the noble jobs the human society created. It is a profession that offers knowledge and skill to shape the young in particular and society at large in order learnt citizens solve problems not only of theirs but of society as well. As noble as it is, it is also a challenging job at heart with a purpose and social mission, but less of promoting self. 

For lack of understanding and a deviation of society to other materialistic tendencies, teachers sometimes  do not get the respect and value they deserve, but in most cases they receive respect in class ( when I was a school student decades ago, I am not sure what is happening now in school classrooms). University and college professors mostly receive respect in class and outside of their work places.

But in general it is the responsibility of a civilized society to respect and honor teachers who are parents of knowledge to its young.      

Like any other profession to expect respect out of the precincts is not required. To be really respected inside is not to be expected; but be accepted by members (students and peers). .

Teachers are very much respected in the university by students, peers and other members. But teachers are not as respected as they must be outside the university i.e. by the society. Society gives more value to those who are more powerful in the civil society, which the teachers are not. However teachers are considered nation builders.

Teaching is a noble profession and it has its own dignity and decorum that need to be maintained by teachers and students. 

Good (TRUE) teachers are always respected by students and society sooner or later.

Society is changing very fast and so is our role as a teacher. Getting respect from the students mostly depends on our teaching skill and how we conduct ourselves. Its mutual. But getting respect from the society which is so driven by the materialistic possessions a person has, is something to be looked into. Teachers generally lack in those possessions world wide. I personally feel that teaching is taken up mostly by the ppl who feel passionately about it and that is why rest of the things are not so significant for them. Even the response of the society does not matter after a point.

i am totally agreed that teaching is a noblest profession and the honest teachers have respect inside and outside their institutions...but ... 'privatisation' and 'education as a business' ...ruined respect inside and outside the institutions

An old proverb says "Respect you can respect you." Overall compliance is the result of the behavior of enseigant towards these students. Certainly there will be some (students) stray sheep

Teachers are respected because they earn the respect.  It's not freely given anymore.  In some places here, there are teachers who don't even respect the traffic rules.  They ride their bikes without helmets, and give a poor example to students.

But teachers who practice what they say are highly regarded, and those who teach well are both RESPECTED AND REMEMBERED.  Thanks.

Integrity is one profession, devotion and devoted extra time students or students is another. There is no doubt that everything should be based on mutual respect. And respect is out of the house. How do we raise their such letter has society. You can not powiezać all school and teachers. There are still parents who also have to earn it by educating children to respect what you will see when you start getting older.

Certainly, mutual respect is very important element.

Teachers earn and command respect, but inside the campus of university.

There had been time in India when school teachers were considered most important component of society. Now-a-days it is lost!

Many reasons are there for teachers not being respected as compared to how much they were being respected earlier:

• Changing value system;
• More materialistic nature;
• Changed attitude and thinking of teachers.

So, if we have respect for other people, we can also expect respect. If we educate our children to respect elders, neighbors, grandparents, then we can assume that our children will respect us in the future. If the work we respect our boss and colleagues of those older than us and those who start work later, we take seriously the students do not elevating their levels, achievements, and remaining still with a human face, we are respected. However, we must remember always to be an example to all around, not only when we welcome and recognize when karzdy us, but especially when no one sees you and an unknown.

• Delivery to students' minds;
• Confidence;
• Calmness;
• Patience;
• Considerate for students;
• Truthfulness;
• Faithful to profession;
• Physical and mental fitness;
• Command on language;and many more................

These traits may help teachers in earning respect.

Dear friends, at times we have students who remember us long after we have taught them.  My students come to visit me during their holidays.  I am very touched by their kindness, it's beyond respect.  And they help me, by sharing their experiences with my present students.  In this pic, we have Mohan who is now in medical school.  He shared his experience of self directed learning that he experienced when he was with me, and experiences of SDL in varsity.  In the second pic, I was standing among my girls.

All teachers are not respected equally!

Each of us has such students, who remember us after many years, those who visit us from time to time and we can remember them. But those displayed yet about which we forget because we had a few lessons with them, but they remember us and sometimes in the store, on the street, at the office accost us and remind us that we were our students. It's very enjoyable and invaluable.
