COVID-19 pandemic has created panic and fear, but what is coming after that is more concerning. We were not ready for the pandemic outbreak, but are we prepared for the next recession?
Definitely the question of the moment, the month and the year! It depends on who "we" are (in the question): different countries differ in circumstances, challenges, strengths and limitations. In one respect the question has already been overtaken by events: the "next recession" is already here. Taking a positive view, there is a good prospect that some of the short term adjustments we have all had to make, may continue into the foreseeable future. I refer here to greater use of IT so that more people will work from their homes, including a displacement towards on-line learning and videoconferencing for business, reduced dependence on global supply chains with more emphasis on local product development and purchasing, accelerated shifts towards renewable energy (with a lower carbon footprint), and - not least - a higher value placed on public health readiness including social safety nets, especially in countries that (from their COVID morbidity and mortality profiles) have proven to be least well prepared e.g., USA, Brazil, Russia, UK).
Dealing with recession needs global coordination as we are in a globalized world. Countries need one another to overcome a recession through coordination of policies, trade and investments. This is getting ourselves ready as no countries can do everything by themselves in a globalized world.
