For many scientific phenomena and for economic growth, the rate is all important. Likely the same applies to a virus infecting a population. COVID-19 seems to have a high spread rate. Worldwide, is it doubling twice a week? Or once a week? Starting from 2 infected persons, 30 doublings is over one billion (1,073,741,824). If the virus could double its spread twice a week, then it would reach 30 doublings in 15 weeks. What is the doubling rate?

It also follows that inhibiting the rate of spread is of paramount importance.

Dr. John Campbell has posted videos with his views on the epidemiology of COVID-19, for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C-NpadSNuA. He suggests there already is a global pandemic.

Nature Brief mentioned risk-communication advisers Jody Lanard and Peter Sandman who say governments and health-care institutions should start telling the public to get ready for a COVID-19 pandemic. (Virology Down Under blog).
